A planchet is a blank
coin that is ready to be struck by an engraved
die. It is a coin without any detail as explained
in our coin terminology
section.
A planchet error is an
error during the minting process where the planchet
is misaligned or struck wrong. There are also
instances where the wrong coin was fed into the
wrong stamping machine. This resulted in a coin
being stamped with a coin of a different type's
design. Think of it as a nickel sized coin with
a dime design. There are several of these types
of planchet errors.
While most coins with
these types of errors never make it out of the
mint, there is the occasional one that does and
it makes a great addition to any coin collection
and is highly sought by most collectors today.
