The Half Dollar or fifty
cent piece was minted and brought into circulation
in 1794. It has been a favorite amongst collectors
and has been minted almost every year since 1794.
The earlier Half Dollars
were made mostly from silver. This caused a lot
of half dollar hoarding and circulation numbers
started to dip. The government then altered the
coins composition to a lower silver value and
eventually only minted proof half dollars in silver.
These silver half dollar proofs are always being
bought and sold and they are quite popular.
Just like other coins
the half dollar saw many variation throughout
the years.
