If your like me you are
probably wondering what a half dime is. Isn't
a nickel half of a dime? Well yes it is but the
Half Dime came before the nickel. Confused yet?
The half dime is much
smaller than a dime, in both diameter and thickness
and that is where the name comes from. They appear
to be half dimes. The half dime had the same monetary
value of the nickel but it was minted in silver.
The half dime was originally minted in 1794 and
production stopped in 1873. This was the same
year that the nickel was first created so there
was no longer a need for a silver half dime.
As with all other American
coins the half dime has quite a few variations.
- Flowing Hair Half Dime 1794-1795
- Draped Bust Half Dime 1796-1797
- Small Eagle Half Dime 1796-1797
- Heraldic Eagle Half Dime 1800-1805
- Capped Bust Half Dime 1829-1837
- Liberty Seated Half Dime 1837-1873
