A double die error coin
can be very hard to see with the naked eye. These
coins show some doubling on the details. It is
most often seen on the lettering or numbering
found on the fronts and backs of coins.
These error are caused
by defective dies. The coins are not struck twice.
The actual die itself has some doubling that is
then transferred onto the surface of the coin.
Some double die coins are very valuable and can
fetch top dollar at auctions.
The image below is a great
example of a coin with a double die error. These
errors are usually much more subtle and hard to
see.
