Have you ever looked
at a coin and wondered where it was made? There is a way to
tell where coins were minted. It is called a mint mark and
it helps to identify where the coin was produced. In most
cases it is as simple as a small letter stamped on the front
or the back of the coin. The Mint mark is in a different place
for just about every style of coin and coins with certain
mint marks are more valuable than others due to the amount
of coins that were minted in that specific place. Here is
a list of all the mint marks and what they mean.
- C - The coin was minted in Charlotte,
North Carolina. This mint mark is found only on gold coins
dated 1836-1861. If you have a coin with this mint mark
in your collection, you are a lucky collector.
- CC - A mint mark of CC,
means the coin was minted in Carson City, Nevada from 1870-1893.
- D - A mint mark of D,
can be two places and it depends on the coin. If it is a
gold coin then a mint mark of D mean it was minted in Dahlonega,
Georgia in 1838-1861. All other coins with a mint mark of
D are coins that where minted in Denver,
Colorado in 1906 to the present.
- O - A mint mark of O,
means the coin was minted in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1838-1861
and 1879-1909.
- P - A mint mark of P, means
the coin was minted in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1793
to the present.
- S - A mint mark of S,
means the coin was minted in San Francisco, California in
1854 to the present. Coins with a mint mark of S are generally
more valuable due to the limited number of coins minted
in San Francisco. Many proof coins are also made in San
Francisco.
- W - A coin with the mint mark of W
is made in West Point, New York. You can find it on coins
from 1984 to the present.

want to know where they are and that really depends on the
coin and the year the coin was minted. Get out your magnifying
