The Classic Head Half
Cent was minted from 1809-1836. Like the other
half cents it was made from copper and just like
the other half cents, there were quite a few variations.
It weighs 5.44 grams and has a diameter of 23.5
millimeters. It's edge is plain.
Here are some facts about
the different variations that you will find on
the Classic Head Half Cent.
In 1809, there are several
versions. There is one with a very small o inside
the zero of the date. There is one with an inverted
nine struck over a regular nine and then there
is a normal date. In 1810 there were no variations
of the classic head half cent.
In 1811, there were date
variations. Some of the coins the numbers on the
date are spaced wide while others the numbers
are not.
In 1828 there were two
versions and they are easy to identify. One has
thirteen stars while the other has only twelve.
The hardest to come by
and most valuable Classic Head Half Cent is the
1831 and there are several counterfeits where
the date has been altered, so buyer beware. Make
sure you coin has been certified by a professional
coin grading service before buying.
