An error coin that is
classified as a broadstrike is a coin that has
been struck by it's appropriate die while the
die collar was missing. The die collar holds the
blank or planchet in place.
Broadstrike coins are
wider than the regular coin version. Without the
collar to hold the metal in place the metal spreads
out further than it is supposed to. These error
coins make a great addition to any coin collection.
Notice how much wider the dime is in the image
below. It is a perfect example of a broadstrike
coin.
