The 3 cent piece was first
introduced in 1851. It saw many variations in
it's time. It was first minted from a combination
of silver and copper. These coins are the lightest
and smallest US coins ever produced. They are
slightly smaller than a dime. The silver 3 cent
piece was minted from 1851-1873.
During the civil war silver
coins were hoarded on a huge scale, so much that
the government stopped producing the silver 3
cent piece and created a nickel base three cent
piece. This coin was larger than the original
three cent piece and the exact diameter of a dime.
It was produced from 1851-1873.So now you must
add the two different versions of the 3 cent piece
to your collection.
Just like most coins there
were some other variations with the 3 cent piece.
Here are the Variations. There are three variations
of the silver three cent piece that was minted
from 1851-1873. The first variation was minted
from 1851-1853. The second variation was minted
from 1854-1858 and the third variation was minted
from 1859-1873. All three variations occur on
the backside of the coin. Here are the most common
3 cent pieces.
